Elder Mother

This piece was completed for a show at StolenSpace Gallery on Brick Lane in London. The show, titled ‘Through Her Eyes’ explored themes of femininity and womanhood through the eyes of a selection of female artists work.

As I’m fascinated by mythology I chose to explore a traditional figure from Scandinavian and British folk lore called the Elder Mother. A being very much connected to nature. The Elder tree was thought to be both sacred and dangerous and a guardian was invented to protect them and the people who use their properties. I jumped at the chance to realise this idea and give my modern female perspective on this ancient witch like figure.
